Assessment and physical training programs
can be provided for clients recovering from a work related
(eg. through a workers compensation scheme) or motor vehicle
accident injury.
Staff of the Centre for physical Activity
in Ageing (CPAA) can provide specialised individual exercise
rehabilitation or work fitness/conditioning programs that
are continually monitored (and adjusted accordingly) to facilitate
a prompt return to work.
Training programs and assessment services
are also available for clients recovering from sporting or
other injuries and those with chronic disabilities.
Clients attending the Eastern Regional
Day Hospital, Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre may participate
in exercise rehabilitation programs conducted by the CPAA.
Clients attending this program must be referred. This referral
system espouses a multi-disciplinary approach to client care.
Clients are commonly referred to other
disciplines for treatment of acute problems. Referral is then
made to the Centre to manage long term difficulties requiring
a prolonged course of prescribed activity.

The Centre's staff can provide specialised
individual exercise rehabilitation or work fitness/conditioning
programs that are continually monitored (and adjusted accordingly)
to facilitate a prompt return to work.
Training programs and assessment services
are also available for clients recovering from sporting or
other injuries and those with chronic disabilities.
Assessments may involve:
- Anthropometry to determine body
fat and body mass index. Includes: height, mass, skinfolds,
girths, breadths, etc.;
- Spirometry to determine breathing
efficiency and lung volumes;
- Joint movement to determine adequate
range of motion ;
- Functional strength performance
assessment to determine capacity to perform everyday movements
or evaluate specific muscular weakness;
- Cardio-respiratory capacity to
determine aerobic or heart fitness. Includes a sub-maximal
or maximal worktest;
- Risk factor assessment to determine
general health.
Training modalities may include:
These programs are conducted using
specific gymnasium equipment and/or hydrotherapy facilities.
A home program may also be prescribed.
Exercise rehabilitation programs may
be offered on a group or individual basis. Group sessions
are conducted within a strict ratio of no more than 8 clients
per staff member.
Referral to the CPAA is made via a
Doctor or physiotherapist and in conjunction with the ëcase
manager' (in the case of workers compensation scheme or motor
vehicle accident injury clients) or by self referral (in the
case of private rehabilitation clients).
Workers compensation scheme and motor
vehicle accident injury clients may only attend assessment
and rehabilitation programs following approval by the case
manager.
Clients referred to the CPAA will
require an assessment prior to commencement of any exercise
rehabilitation program.
Full reporting (including initial
assessment, re-assessment and discharge summaries) will be
provided (where appropriately referred and requested) utilising
the Centre's "best practice" model of exercise rehabilitation.
Fees and session times for workers
compensation scheme and motor vehicle accident injury are
available on request.
