| There is increasing demand
nowadays from clients seeking specific information concerning
their physical health.
In an endeavour to meet this demand,
the CPAA offers a number of physical health assessments to
check your height, weight, flexibility, strength, body fat,
blood pressure (resting and exercising) and fitness level.
All assessments are conducted by a
fully trained exercise physiologist within the CPAA. The results
of each assessment are reported against mean values of individuals
of the same sex and age range (using Australian norms) during
a post-test counselling period.
The risks associated with each of
the assessments are no greater than that which you would encounter
during everyday tasks such as walking up stairs, running to
catch a bus or lifting heavy objects. Nevertheless, the Centre
is fully equipped to handle any adverse medical event.
All clients are strongly encouraged to obtain
clearance from their Doctor
prior to the conduct of any strength or fitness evaluation.
Specially prepared forms are available on request.
Specific physical health assessments
include:
A) Height and body mass - assessed
using calibrated weighing scales and a stadiometer (measures
stretch height), the Body Mass Index is also determined;
B) Flexibility - assessed whilst
sitting and reaching forward on a specially constructed sit
and reach box;
C) Strength - assessed by recording
the grip strength of each hand. Abdominal strength is assessed
through a five-stage pass/fail sit-up procedure;
D) Body fat - assessed by the sum
of skinfolds taken by a caliper at various sites, including:
biceps, triceps, subscapular (shoulder), mid abdominal, supraspinale
(hip) and medial calf;
E) Blood pressure - systolic and
diastolic blood pressures are assessed at rest and during
submaximal exercise (performed on an exercise bike) with a
standard mercury sphygmomanometer and stethoscope;
F) Fitness level - assessed from
a cycle ergometer (exercise bike) work test using data attained
from 3 workloads (each workload is designed to elicit a different
heart rate). Physical work capacity and predicted maximum
oxygen consumption (aerobic fitness) are then calculated.
Assessments may be undertaken individually,
in any combination or as a complete package.
Bookings and/or advice is available by contacting
the CPAA. Fees for each physical health assessment are available
on request.
A physical health assessment conducted by
the CPAA should not be regarded as a substitute for medical
care or advice available from your regular medical adviser.
The assessments are only intended to provide basic information
pertaining to aspects of your physical health or fitness.
