The Centre for Physical Activity in
Ageing (CPAA) conducts a Certificate level course for Fitness
Leaders and health professionals (Exercise and the Older Person)
within the structure of the TAFE Regency College: School of
Sport and Recreation Studies.
The CPAA also involved presents numerous
lectures, seminars and short courses to students enrolled
in tertiary and other vocational courses.
The course will enable participants to practically
apply principles learnt in fitness leadership to the instruction
of older person programs. Participants will be trained to
conduct safe and suitable fitness programs to cater for the
range of diverse needs amongst older persons. This course,
in association with the fitness leadership core course,
will qualify participants to register as an accredited instructor.
a) Participants wishing to advance
to the Fitness Leader certificate level will be required to
have completed a fitness leadership "core course" or equivalent.
b) Participants may nominate to
undertake this course on an Attendance only basis
without proceeding to the Fitness Leader certificate level.
Attendance only certificate participants are not required
to complete the written examination, observations, field placement
or practical assessment.
The course is presented by exercise physiologists,
fitness leaders, geriatricians, physiotherapists and other
health professionals specialising in the provision of programs
and/or care of older persons.
- Structural and functional changes
with advancing age.
- The needs of older exercisers.
- Medical considerations and appropriate
clearance for exercise.
- Fitness testing for older persons.
- Fitness programming options.
- General exercise prescription:
cardio-respiratory;
stretching and mobility;
conditioning (strengthening).
- Mode of exercise.
- Use of music in older person classes.
- Medication usage and exercise amongst
older persons.
- Safety considerations.
- Common movement and balance disorders
in the older person.
- Exercise compliance.
- Research trends.
The examination contains written short answer
questions. The "open book" style examination is intended to
encourage participants to continue the learning process through
questions designed to provoke thought and further consideration.
Participants are required to score at least 60% in the written
examination.
Observation of best practice (classes conducted
by qualified older person instructors totalling 10 hours)
is to be undertaken in various industry settings. The observation
record sheet must be completed before the practical assessment
can be undertaken.
In conjunction with industry, the on-the-job
training component will comprise 10 hours of practical teaching
consisting initially of segments of a class and progressively
the entire older person class. On-the-job training should
(where possible) be conducted with a qualified instructor.
The field placement record sheet must be completed before
the practical assessment can be undertaken.
The practical assessment is based on the
successful conduct of an older person exercise class in an
on-the-job setting. This assessment will take place on the
successful completion of the written examination, observations
and field placement. An approved assessor will conduct the
practical assessment.
All presentations associated with this course
will be conducted at the CPAA, Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre,
207-255 Hampstead Road, Northfield.
All enquires and enrolments in this
course should be directed to the CPAA.
The course fee includes all lecturing,
written material and practical assessment fees (if undertaken
within 6 months of completing the course).
Further information about enrolment
is available from the CPAA.
Fitness leaders, exercise and sport
scientists, nurses, nurse aides, allied health professionals
and others merely interested in understanding more about exercise
and its effect upon older persons.
The course will primarily focus on
the conduct of "older person" fitness classes and the incorporation
of exercise into a program specifically aimed at older persons.
